Give Muse a body

Open-source ESP32 firmware that turns an off-the-shelf board into a device for Muse, Meta's personal AI agent. The board pairs to the Muse app over BLE, joins Wi-Fi and holds an encrypted session to your Muse VM. Meta's SDK is open source (Apache-2.0); this page tracks which boards it supports and what each one can do.

How to start

Pick a board, start a build, hand it to your agent

1

Describe it or pick a board

Tell the planner below what you want, or compare the boards further down. Not sure? The M5Stack StickS3 is the cheapest Full UI board.

2

Start a build

It saves the parts list with store links, print files and a step checklist to My builds. You can also save just the idea and pick a board later.

3

Tell your agent

Copy the prompt or open the build in Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor or Muse Code. It walks you through ordering, assembly, flashing and pairing.

Start a build

Describe the Muse gadget you want. We'll pick boards that can do it, then save it to My builds.

Firmware path

How to build one

  1. Get an SDK token at https://gadgets.muse.ai/settings/sdk-tokens (never commit it or paste it into a public repo).
  2. Install ESP-IDF v6.0.1 for your board's chip only: git clone -b v6.0.1 --recursive https://github.com/espressif/esp-idf.git ~/esp/esp-idf-v6 && ~/esp/esp-idf-v6/install.sh <chip> && . ~/esp/esp-idf-v6/export.sh
  3. git clone https://github.com/facebookincubator/muse-gadget-sdk && cd muse-gadget-sdk/esp32
  4. Set the token: idf.py menuconfig > ESP32 Device SDK > Muse Gadgets SDK token (or CONFIG_GADGET_SDK_TOKEN in the build's sdkconfig).
  5. Build with the board's command below, set the token, build again, then flash with the board's flash command (tools/muse/board.sh flash <board> PORT). If flashing can't connect: hold BOOT, tap RESET, release BOOT.
  6. In the Muse app, turn on Settings > Devices > Developer mode, then Settings > Devices > Add Device (+). Pick MuseGadget-XXXXXX and press the board's button (BOOT on dev kits) when the light breathes blue. Green = connected.

Or let a coding agent do it:

curl -fsSL https://dev.meta.ai/install.sh | sh && git clone https://github.com/facebookincubator/muse-gadget-sdk && cd muse-gadget-sdk/esp32 && muse --disable-sandbox # then: "Build this firmware for my <board> and flash it." Any coding agent that reads AGENTS.md can do the same.

Your SDK token ships inside the firmware: never commit it or paste it into a public repo.

Linux device SDK

Turn a Linux box into a Muse gadget

A Python service (musegadget) that turns a Linux box with Bluetooth LE into a Muse gadget. Muse gets shell, file and health commands on the machine and can push messages back to you.

Official boards

  • Raspberry Pi 5 · $50-120 · Featured on gadgets.muse.ai.
  • Raspberry Pi 4 Model B · $35-65 · Listed in the Linux SDK README.
  • Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W · $15-25 · Listed in the Linux SDK README; slow but enough for shell and file commands.

Revive an old mini PC

  • Dell Wyse 5070 (thin client) · $40-90 · Not on Meta's list. Meets the stated requirements on Debian/Ubuntu if it has Bluetooth LE; most units need a USB BLE adapter.
  • HP t620 Plus (thin client) · $30-70 · Not on Meta's list. Add a USB Bluetooth LE adapter.
  • Intel NUC (Older Generations) · $40-150 · Not on Meta's list. Many NUCs ship with Bluetooth; check yours.
  • Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny (M Series) · $35-120 · Not on Meta's list. Bluetooth depends on the Wi-Fi card fitted; add a USB BLE adapter if missing.

Built-in commands

  • system.run
  • file.read
  • file.write
  • device.health

Add a spec to COMMAND_SPECS in linux/src/musegadget/executor.py (description, required/optional params with type + description, optional timeout_ms), handle it in Executor.run returning ok(payload) or error(message), then restart the service.

Commands run as the install user with exactly that account's permissions. If it can sudo, so can Muse. Use a dedicated low-privilege user (--run-as USER) unless you need more.

Fabrication package

Print it, or get it made

Each package includes an STL for printing, STEP for CAD/CNC, and a fab.json file with print settings and checks.

Hackshop never places orders for you.

SDK token terms

The fine print (SDK token terms)

Personal, non-commercial use with your own Muse account. A token can be linked to at most 50 devices. You may not put it in any device you sell, advertise, or list publicly or in a marketplace or app store; other distribution needs Meta's written permission. Provided as-is; Meta can change, withdraw or revoke access at any time. Read the terms.

  • Personal and non-commercial use only.
  • ≤ 50 devices per token.
  • No selling or public listing.
  • Meta can revoke at any time.

Limits

Caveats

  • Boards without PSRAM (classic ESP32, ESP32-C6) run without the home-network tunnel; Muse can still reach and control them.
  • The home-network tunnel lets Muse reach devices on your LAN that expose a local HTTP API. Treat it like giving the agent a foothold on your network.
  • Pairing has no manufacturer verification and can't prevent an active man-in-the-middle attack.
  • Builds are signed with the included development key and never enable Secure Boot. Enable NVS encryption (CONFIG_HOMEHUB_NVS_ENCRYPTION).
  • Custom ESP32 commands are not a documented API yet: the command set (display.draw_url, sensors.read, camera.capture, ...) is hardcoded in main/app.c.

Common questions

FAQ

Which board should I buy first?

M5Stack StickS3 ($22) for a pocket remote, Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-AMOLED-1.75C (round) ($40-42) for a desk avatar, or Espressif ESP32-C5-DevKitC-1 ($15-20) as the cheapest start; Muse calls it the recommended starting point.

Which boards can't do voice or images?

No voice: ideaspark ESP32 with 1.9" LCD, Espressif ESP32-C5-DevKitC-1, Seeed SenseCAP Indicator (D1 series), Seeed reTerminal E1001 (7.5" e-paper) and Seeed reTerminal E1002 (7.3" color e-paper). No images: Waveshare ESP32-C6-Touch-AMOLED-1.8, Espressif ESP32-C5-DevKitC-1 and Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition.

Do I need a paid Muse subscription?

The SDK needs a Muse account and the Muse app with Developer mode. Muse Home Link (Meta's own dongle) is the piece that requires an active US subscription.

Can I sell gadgets I build?

No. The SDK token terms forbid putting a token in any device you sell, advertise or list publicly; other distribution needs Meta's written permission. A token can be linked to at most 50 devices.

What is the home-network tunnel?

It lets Muse reach devices on your home Wi-Fi that have a local web API, like a printer, a smart plug or a Home Assistant server, so it can check on them or control them for you. Treat it like giving the agent a foothold on your network. Boards without PSRAM (classic ESP32, ESP32-C6) run without the home-network tunnel; Muse can still reach and control them.
